President Gotabaya Rajapaksa yesterday instructed that all the country’s pageants should be organized according to their customs and they should be conducted adhering to COVID-19 guidelines.

However, the public shall not be allowed to congregate at these events.

The President told Basnayaka Nilames, including the Diyawadana Nilame of Sri Dalada Maligawa that the Pageants could be organized in the main temples and the Devalas as per the tradition of the Perahera culture.

He was addressing a meeting held at the Presidential Secretariat yesterday with the Basnayaka Nilames, officials of the Ministry of Buddha Sasana and the members of the Presidential Task Force. Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi was also present.

Rajapaksa instructed that the annual procession based on the Kandy Dalada Maligawa and Kataragama,Devinuwara and Sabaragamuwa temples should take place in keeping with the health guidelines.

People will not allowed be to flock in any of these places to observe or to participate in the pageant at any of these shrines. The Pada Yatra will not be allowed from Nallur, Trincomalee or from any other parts of the East to participate in Kataragama Perahera.

The members of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 stressed the need to follow up on the health recommendations and it was decided that all artists participating in the Perahera should obtain a report from the health authorities in their respective areas.

A minimum number of people should attend the water-cutting ceremony.

The Kumbal and Randoli Peraheras of the Dalada Perahera will be broadcast live on TV for 10 days and on the Internet to enable the public to view the proceedings from anywhere in Sri Lanka and the globe.
