Mother, son die in accident, infant survives

A woman crossing the road along with her child had died in an accident on the Colombo-Kandy Main Road in Warakapola, Udukumbura on June 10 night, Warakapola police said.

Kegalle police has stopped the van that was involved in the accident and handed over it to the Warakapola police, police said.

The victims have been identified as Diana Veronica Thomas (27) and her eldest son, Kavidu Gunawardena (11), a student of Othnapitiya Kanishta Vidyalaya. They were residents of Warakapola, Udukumbura, police said.

The woman was a mother of four. On the day, she had gone to a private medical centre to get medicine for her four-month-old infant. When they were crossing the road, the van that was plying from Colombo towards Peradeniya had run over them killing the woman and the 11-year-old son.

The infant has survived since he was thrown to the side of the road in the accident.

Those who gathered had admitted the infant to the Warakapola Hospital and then he was transferred to the Kegalle Hospital, police said.

The eldest son had died on the spot and the mother had died on admission to hospital.

Investigations are continuing.
