Doc’s wife, two remanded for ‘Treasure hunting’

The doctor’s wife and the two men who were arrested Tuesday in connection with the ‘Treasure hunting’ incident at the archeological site near the Kimbulagala Mountain in Nandimithragama, Vavuniya, were remanded till June 24 by Vavuniya Magistrate Tashmin Fouzan, yesterday.

Fouzan also ordered the police to collect an archaeological record of the excavations. Equipment used for the treasure hunting, magical books, battery acid, battery powder, brass rings and a large quantity of textiles were produced in court. The suspects are Samarasinghe Gunasekera Liyanage Wasantha Kumara (48), Samarasinghe Arachchilage Heshan Wasantha (32), Pahahena Kagedara Mudiyanselage Pushpa Irangani (42), the doctor’s wife.

They were arrested while digging in the archeological site by the Bogaswewa Police officers. Equipment used for the excavation, including books containing rituals and magic spells, battery acid, battery powder, brass rings and a significant amount of textiles, were produced in court.

Police informed Court that the suspects had dug a pit about eight feet square and two feet deep at the site in question.
