Anil Jayasinghe: Par excellence in the field of rugby

Anil Jayasinghe, the very first Manager of the ‘Society of Rugby Football Referees’ in Sri Lanka completes the third year at the eventful Society. Anil, who came into the scene in 2017, from Kandy, was a live wire giving the best highlights for the referees and the game.

Anil was an excellent and upright sportsman and the referee’s manager post was created at a time when the referees require good support from both the sportsmen and the rugby lovers. Refereeing is a vital component in the game.

Anil, a veteran in the game of rugby with a wide range of experience in the field, stand out as a player, coaching, refereeing and administration. Born in Kandy at Nittawela, he had his education at ‘Vidyartha College’, where he excelled in rugby and cricket and led both teams at the national school level.

In rugby, he was an outstanding player for the School, ‘outstation schools circuit’, ‘combined Schools circuit’, Kandy Sports Club, Up-Country team and he was also in the national pool and had the privilege of leading both Kandy Sports Club and Up-Country teams. He has made a great contribution to uplift the standard of the game over there in the hills, by his involvement in the fields of refereeing, coaching and administration.

Anil has coached his alma mater Vidyartha College, Dharmaraja College, Trinity College both juniors and seniors and is one of the Bradby winning coach for Trinity. He was the coached for Zahira College for some period and also Kandy Sports Club. He was invited to coach Dimbulla ACC, when they played in the All India Tournament. He has followed coaching courses in Scotland, England, and Wales. He was good in teaching players on ‘how to tackle’ at a match; he used to instruct his student/players to tackle low.

Anil’s contribution to uplift the game in Kandy as a coach and referee has helped many individuals. At one time he was vice president of the Sri Lanka Rugby Referees Society, also secretary of the Central Province Rugby Football Union and ground secretary of the Kandy Sports Club for well over ten years, where he did a lot of improvement to the ground at the club to make it a top class rugby field.

After hanging up his boots, prematurely, Anil Jayasinghe took to refereeing, in 1992 and accompanied the Sri Lanka rugby team overseas and has also blown in overseas tournaments. He is an IRB Educator and Coach Match Official (CMO) for the Referees Society of Sri Lanka and Asian Rugby Football Union (ARFU).
