‘White Van’ press case:

Rajitha granted bail

Former Minister Rajitha Senaratne, who was arrested in connection with organising the ‘White Van’ media briefing on November 10, ahead of the Presidential Election, was granted bail by Colombo Additional Magistrate Priyantha Liyanage, yesterday. He was released on two sureties of Rs.500,000.

The magistrate highlighted that, according to the Criminal Procedure Code, the charges which had been filed against the suspect were bailable offences. Deputy Solicitor-General Dileepa Peries, appearing on behalf of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), informed court that they had recorded statements from members attached to three electronic media channels with regard to the incident.

Peries also pointed out that the CID had concluded the initial stage of the investigations pertaining to this incident.

He added that they are to take further legal action against the suspect before next calling date. Further inquiries were fixed for June 26.
