Jaffna Airport facilities to be upgraded

Facilities at the Palaly international airport will be swiftly enhanced, Industrial Export, Investment Promotion, Tourism and Aviation Minister Prasanna Ranatunga said today.

The Government expects to sign an agreement with the Indian Government for the development of the airport shortly. The agreement which has been planned to sign with the Indian government was delayed as a result of the COVID 19 pandemic.

Since the country is gradually returning to normality, the Ministry expects to expedite the development work of the Palaly airport," Minister said.

"India has already agreed to provide Sri Lanka with a grant of Rs.300 million for the development of the airport which started its international flights last year," he added.

Under the proposed work on the MoU, the facilities at the airport such as terminal modifications, electricity supplies, utility services and transit facilities are to be improved.

Meanwhile, the Government has planned to increase the operation of passenger flights and air services at Mattala, Batticaloa and Ratmalana International Airports in addition to the Jaffna International Airport while providing adequate precautionary measures to prevent COVID-19 from entering the country.
