People’s confidence in EC lost – SLPP

The people’s confidence in the Election Commission is dwindling as it has not been able to hold elections on time, the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) members claimed.

They were participating in a SLPP press conference held at 10.30 a.m. yesterday.

The Election Commission has again postponed declaring the General Election date to elect a parliament that would reflect the people’s wish to assist President Gotabaaya Rajapaksa elected last year, former Parliamentarian Kanaka Herath said.

He said further that not a single COVID 19 patient has been reported during the last 40 days from the public. But the Election Commission is waiting for the approval of the World Health Organization although the health sectors in the country approved that the election could be held.

He added that the election Commission is acting not to hold elections but to delay them. He added that it had failed to hold the Provincial Council Election too while it delayed more than three years to hold the local government election.

Former Parliamentarian Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe said the former Election Commissioner General held elections on time until it was replaced with the Election Commission under the 19th amendment to the Constitution by the former Good Governance Government. He added that all the parties in the Opposition today are responsible for the public being deprived of the Provincial Councils although none of them utter a word on it.

He said further that Sajith Premadasa and others in Opposition went before court recently against holding elections. However, one of the Election Commission members Prof. Ratnajeewan Hoole went to Court to support the view of former TNA MP Sumanthiran. It affects the independence of the Commission, he said.
