Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardena seeks mechanism to ensure food safety

Higher Education, Technology and Innovation Minister Dr. Bandula Gunawardane yesterday urged the Sri Lanka Accreditation Board for Conformity Assessment (SLAB), Sri Lanka Standards Institute and Consumer Affairs Authority to make a collaborative effort to implement a new mechanism to ensure the country’s food safety.

The Minister was participating as Chief Guest in the national commemoration of the World Accreditation Day yesterday at the BMICH under the theme of “Accreditation: Improving Food Safety”.

He said the SLAB is an important body running the Higher Education, Technology and Innovation Ministry, which is committed to providing accreditation services to its clients at the highest level of integrity, effectiveness and efficiency. “SLAB was set up by Act No. 32 of 2005.

It is the national accreditation authority set up in the National Quality Infrastructure (NQI) to regularise and harmonise relevant activities required to assure quality of Sri Lankan products and services. So it functions as the inspectors of inspectors,” he said.

The Minister pledged to provide necessary ministerial level assistance to set up such a procedure.

Ministry Secretary Anura Dissanayake, SLAB Chairman Dr. Sampath Wasala, European Union in Sri Lanka and the Maldives Ambassador Denis Chaibi, SLAB CEO Chandrika Thilakaratne, members of the board participated.
