A demonstration was held in front of the Kurunegala Teaching Hospital (KTH), yesterday, against the transfer of its Director, Dr. Sarath Weerabandara.

Moreover, KTH Acting Director Dr. N. Fareed, who was appointed by the Health Ministry on June 5, has decided to resign from his post owing following the protests. He had complained that an organisation called 'Mothers for Justice' was attempting to link his name with Dr. Shafi Sihabdeen, who is currently under investigation for alleged illegal sterilization procedures carried out on women.

'Mothers for Justice', convening a press conference on Saturday, had alleged that the former Director had been transferred to suppress evidence against Dr. Sihabdeen. They have demanded to removal of the Acting Director.

The Health Ministry removed Dr. Weerabandara on complaints that he had allegedly failed to prepare the institution to face the COVID-19 outbreak. The Government Medical Officers' Association (GMOA) had also previously written to the Health Ministry Secretary, complaining about Dr. Weerabandara.
