DNA test on black leopard

A DNA test will be conducted on the rare black panther which died at elephant transit home in the Udawalawa National Park to ascertain if it belonged to the subspecies of Sri Lankan leopard (panthera pardius kotiya) or to ny other sub species.

The DNA analysis will be conducted at the Agricultural Bi-technological Centre of Peradeniya University. The leopard was rescued by wildlife officials from a snare in Nallathanniya died while receiving treatment on May 29.

According to Agricultural Bi-technological Centre Director Dr. Pradeepa Bandaranayake, the DNA test will be conducted at the request of Director General of Wildlife Department C Suriyabandara.

She said they have already started analysing the blood samples from the leopard on May 29 and the final blood analysis will be announced in two months.
