Dengue and rat fever kill 34 this year

Twenty-two dengue deaths and 12 deaths due to rat fever (leptospirosis) were reported across the country this year. About 19,940 positive dengue cases and about 2,198 patients suffering from leptospirosis have been identified countrywide this year, Kurunegala District DMO Dr. A. Priyadarshana told the Daily News yesterday (5).

A majority of dengue patients were reported from the Colombo District while the Ratnapura District recorded the highest number of rat fever cases, the Health Ministry confirms.

“All government institutions, including schools, in Kurunegala and Puttalam Districts are to be inspected by public health inspectors (PHIs) next week, starting from June 8 for possible mosquito breeding grounds. Heads of government firms would be charged and fined for having mosquito breeding sites in their premises. For this operation, about 127 PHIs and 300 family health nurses will be deployed by the Health Ministry,” he said.
