Shrimp farming to be developed

The Cabinet of Ministers approved a proposal made by Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Douglas Devananda to develop the shrimp farming industry of the country, Co-cabinet Spokesman Plantation Industries and Export Agriculture Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said. 

Speaking at a media conference held yesterday at the Government Information Department to announce the cabinet decisions, Minister Pathirana said that this decision had been taken after considering the huge demand prevailing in the country for quality prawns. 

The National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA) has already taken measures to implement a public and private partnership programme to promote hybrid shrimp named Litopenaeus vannamei.
