Department of Education’s first woman marathon winner

Tamara Padmini Wickremasinghe is a fine athlete who was the first woman marathon winner attached to the Department of Education.

She was at Mahamaya Girls School, Kandy for 20 years and Pushpadana Girls School, Kandy for 7 years as a Physical Training Instructor who produced outstanding athletes in both schools.

Tamara was an old girl of Alawwa Maha Vidyalaya. She started athletics under K.L.F. Wijedasa who was the Director of Physical Training at the University of Colombo.

She competed in the Track & Field Meet held at the Duraiappa Stadium, Jaffna in 2011 and won three events i.e. 800 Metres, Triple Jump and High Jump events. At the meet, Tamara helped Kandy District teachers to become runners-up in the Team Championship while Jaffna became champions and Western Province finished third. Tamara became the first winner of the women’s marathon in 1982 and that win pushed her forward to represent Sri Lanka in the marathon held in Singapore in 1985.

She has won the 800 and 1500 metre races for three consecutive years in the National Games and then won the 1500, 3000 and 5000 metres races at the Veterans Athletic Meet held in Malaysia in 1997 and Japan in 1998.
