President, PM at ANCL Mihintala Aloka Pooja

This year’s State Poson celebrations will be held at the Mihintale Medamaluwa in Anuradhapura with a limited number of participants under the theme Arogya Paramalabha “(Health is the Paramount Wealth)”.

As a part of the State Poson festival,the Mihinthala Aloka Pooja will also be conducted for the 58th consecutive year by the Associated Newspapers of Ceylon Ltd (ANCL) under the guidance of the Mihinthala Raja Maha Viharaya chief incumbent Venerable Walawahangunawawe Dhammaratana Thera.

The Aloka Pooja will be held with the participation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa and Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa who is also the Buddhist Affairs Minister. The Premier will be the chief guest on the first day of the Mihintala Aloka Pooja, on June 4, while President Rajapaksa will inaugurate the Aloka Pooja on Poya day, June 5.

The National Lotteries Board, Ceylon Electricity Board and Dialog are the co-sponsors of the event.

It commemorates the day on which, Buddhism was introduced in 306 BCE by Arahath Mahinda triggering a widespread and profound revolution in Sri Lanka’s cultural and religious life.

This year marks the 2,328 year anniversary of the arrival of Arahath Mahinda Thera to Sri Lanka.

Following instructions by health authorities, the government has also decided to celebrate Poson without public gathering due to COVID-19 concerns.
