Public transport to be normal from Monday

The Passenger Transport Management Ministry will resume normal bus and train services from June 8 (Monday) adhering to health guidelines.

“These services will be continued considering the public behaviour and the situation pertaining to the COVID-19 pandemic and directives issued by health sector in coming weeks," Passenger Transport Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

Minister Amaraweera made these remarks during the meeting held at the Ministry premises.

“Even though there are around 5,300 SLTB buses and 23,000 private buses, it is not sufficient to transport passengers with the rule that limits the number of passengers to the number of seats available in buses," he added.

Therefore, the maximum number of SLTB and private buses will be deployed to the fleet as well as private buses awaiting for the newly registration and buses deployed to transport schoolchildren and used for trips and pilgrimage will be utilised for the passenger transport services from Monday.
