Stop underworld crime directed from prisons - President

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has emphasized that effective measures should be taken to stop underworld leaders and major drug dealers directing criminal activities from prisons.

The President during a meeting with politicians and relevant officials to discuss the internal matters in prisons yesterday said there is information that a large number of criminal activities and illegal drug trade is directed from prisons by criminal leaders who are serving time for offences.

“This has to be corrected. Take steps to completely halt the use of mobile phones by inmates” the President had told officials, the President’s Media Division said in a press communiqué.

The President also said that if affairs at prisons and the police have deteriorated it will negatively impact law enforcement.

The President further said irrespective of political affiliations he would always back officers who are doing the correct thing.

President Rajapaksa went on to say that measures will be taken to rectify deficiencies in the Prison Department and uplift standards.

He said this will be coordinated by a committee comprising the Defence Secretary, Army Commander, IGP, among others. Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, Secretary to the President P.B.Jayasundera, the Defence Secretary, the Ministry Secretary, the IGP, Tri-Forces Commanders, Commissioner General of Prisons and higher officials from Prisons Department and Police attended the meeting held the the Presidential Secretariat.
