Bail refused for Kusumadasa Mahanama

The Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar refused to grant bail on former president Maithripala Sirisena’s former Chief of Staff Kusumadasa Mahanama.

Former President Maithripala Sirisena’s former Chief of Staff Kusumadasa Mahanama, who was found guilty for soliciting and accepting Rs.20 million bribe from an Indian investor who wished to acquire a section of the Kantale sugar factory, was sentenced to 20 year rigorous imprisonment and fined Rs. 65,000 by the Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar on December 19, 2019.

The Trial-at-Bar bench comprising High Court Judges Sampath Abeykoon (President), Sampath Wijeratne and Champa Janaki Rajaratne rejected the bail application citing that there is no special circumstance to release the accused on bail.
