Chief Magistrate grants bail to eight suspects

The Mihintale Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) Chairman and seven others, who had surrendered to the police after assaulting Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Parliamentarian Upali Ananda and his son, was released on bail by Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate Janaka Prasanna Samarasinghe, yesterday.

Accordingly, Mihintale Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Lal Seneviratne, PS Vice-Chairman E.M Lalith Seneviratne, Nipuna Madushanka, Anura Mendis, Chaminda Sampath, Madhawa Lakraja Seneviratne, Chinthaka Rukman, and Ajith Senadhira, were released on two sureties of Rs.200,000 each. They were also ordered to appear in court tomorrow.

At a special monthly meeting held at the Mihintale Pradeshiya Sabha on the May 29, the suspects had assaulted the MP over a previous argument.

Mihintale Pradeshiya Sabha member Nipuna Madusanka had hit the parliamentarian and his son with an iron rod. The MP and his son were then rushed to the Mihintale Hospital, after which they were transferred to the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital.

Mihintale Police had informed the Anuradhapura Chief Magistrate's Court that the suspects had fled the area after the incident. The Chief Magistrate subsequently issued warrants for their arrest.

However, Mihintale Police were unable to track the PS members down until they surrendered to them.

MP Upali Ananda and his son are currently receiving treatment at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital. Their relatives and neighbors staged a protest regarding it last Saturday.
