HILL COUNTRY BIDS FAREWELL TO MINISTER THONDAMAN

The funeral of late Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) leader and Minister of Livestock and Rural Community Development, Arumugam Thondaman, who left an indelible imprint in the hearts of plantation workers, was held at the Thondaman Sports Ground in Norwood yesterday.

Armugam Thondaman, following the footsteps of his grandfather Savumiyamoorthy Thondaman, made an enormous contribution to the uplift of living standards of the people in the plantation sector.

Crowds kept streaming to the roadside for a last glimpse of their leader as the body was being taken to his house in Ramboda, Kotmale after being airlifted to Gampola on Friday amidst strict health guidelines.

He was popular among people of all walks of life as he was truly dedicated to serving the people.

The funeral proceedings commenced after the placing the casket on a special dais. Religious leaders during their speeches described how the late Minister maintained close association with people of all religions.

Sripadasthanadhipathi and Chancellor of Uva Wellassa University Ven. Bengamuwe Dhammadinna Thera outlined the services of the late Minister in his eulogy.

The casket carrying the remains of the late Minister was placed on the funeral pyre after the conducting of Hindu religious rites by his son Jeevan Thondaman.
