EC’s conduct questionable - Former Minister

The people now think that the Election Commission supports the Opposition to postpone the election. This tarnishes the image of the Election Commission, former Minister W.D.J. Seneviratne said.

According to the former Minister, now the country has not reported a COVID-19 positive case in the last month and only one cluster is active and those affected are at quarantine centres. The former Minister said tha if the Election Commission works productively, the general election can be held by July. “Initial work in this regard has been completed. It is questionable why the commission needs more time to conduct the election,” he said. “The graduates are waiting to undergo training. They cannot receive Rs. 20,000 monthly payment. Now the Election Commission says Rs. 5,000 payment cannot be paid for June because it violates election laws. The country cannot walk forward like this. All expect the Election Commission will do its duty responsibly without any delay, he added.
