‘Opposition attempting to postpone election’

The Opposition is attempting to have the general election postponed and the previous Parliament re-summoned, Land, Wildlife, and Environment Minister S.M. Chandrasena told the Daily News.

The President’s Secretary has also informed the Judiciary that the COVID-19 outbreak in the country is no longer a hindrance to holding elections, Chandrasena said. He added that even certain Election Commission members were in a tug-o’-war regarding the matter as well. Furthermore, referring to the Rs.5,000 relief provided to people during the COVID-19 outbreak, the minister said that the Election Commission has asked it to be halted by June as it would be a breach of Election Laws. Therefore, the government would focus on a life support allowance programme soon, he added.

The Opposition’s allegations that the government is using the Coronavirus outbreak as a tool for political mileage is merely their own tool for political vendetta, Chandrasena said.

Meanwhile, former Minister Chandrani Bandara, at a press briefing held recently in Anuradhapura, said that the government is using the Election Commission as an excuse to hide its inability to provide the public with the Rs.5,000 relief for those affected by the Coronavirus outbreak.
