Senior DIG Sanjeewa Dharmaratne to boost sports in Kandy

Former Nalanda College and Police sportsman Sanjeewa Dharmaratne has come in as the Senior DIG in charge of the Central Province. He takes over from Senior DIG Roshan Fernando who has been transferred to headquarters to assist the Inspector General of Police to combat Covid-19 and also to follow-up on measures taken.

Dharmaratne is a keen follower of sports. He did well in sports at Nalanda College. He played cricket for Colombo University and also in the inter-Police cricket tournament.

Kandy Police has a proud history in sports. Kandy has contributed a lot to Police sports over the years, and a large number of Kandy policemen have donned the blue jersey. Kandy Police has the proud record of having produced some of the topmost sportsmen and women in the field of Football, Rugby, Hockey, Cricket, Table Tennis, Athletics, Swimming, Iron Sport, Cue Sport, Basketball, Netball and to a lesser known extent Lawn Tennis, which are the major sports. In addition, Chess too has caught up in recent times.

Police has given a big hand for sports in Kandy. In the early days most of the inter school cricket matches and big matches, were played at the Police grounds, and they also gave a big hand for schools football, hockey, athletics and volleyball.
