Ensnared leopard released

A rare black leopard that had got trapped in a snare near the Luxapana tea estate in Nallathanniya was rescued and released to the wild by Wildlife authorities today. It was taken to the Randenigala Veterinary Hospital and treated before being released. Nallathanniya Wildlife Officer Prabash Karunatillake said animal is a male and believed to be around six years and seven feet in length. He said it had similar genetical mutations similar to the black leopard previously spotted in the Sri Pada wilderness. The animal had been ensnared near a vegetable plot in the upper section of the estate, according to Wildlife officers.The barbed wire snare had been erected to prevent wild animals from destroying the vegetable cultivation and the trapped black leopard had been injured.
