Narcotics, illicit liquor worth Rs. 2,340 mn seized during curfew

Heroin, cannabis and illegal liquor worth Rs. 2,340 million were taken into custody during islandwide operations conducted by Police during the curfew imposed from March 20 to May 15 in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19, Kurunegala Senior Divisional Secretary W.E. Jayathilake told the Daily News yesterday (24) in Kurunegala.

“Accordingly, about 232 kilogrammes of heroin, 550 kilogrammes of cannabis, 1,032,445 litres of illegal liquor and about 13,465,873 litres of illegal brew were seized and nearly 50,153 suspects were arrested during this period. The Police Headquarters has already confirmed these facts,” he said.

“Since all liquor stores were ordered to remain closed during the period the curfew was imposed, there was a big demand for illegal liquor countrywide, which led to the large-scale production of the same,” the Kurunegala Senior Divisional Secretary said.
