Seven remanded over Maligawatte stampede

Seven persons including a businessman arrested in connection with the incident at Maligawatte, where three women died and eight others were injured in a stampede, have been remanded until June 4 by Colombo Additional Magistrate Kanchana Neranjani de Silva.

Over 300 individuals had gathered to receive monetary donations at a private residence located along the Jumma Masjid Road, Maligawatte. The seven suspects were arrested on the day of the incident and produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court. The Additional Magistrate further ordered those seven suspects to undergo mandatory quarantine measures in light of the prevailing COVID-19 situation.

Meanwhile, the Magistrate issued an order directing the Colombo Judicial Medical Officer to submit a post mortem report regarding the bodies of three women who died in the stampede. The three women were aged 59, 62 and 68. The injured are currently receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital. Maligawatte Police are conducting further inquiries.
