Four top 1000 runs, three take 100 wickets

St. Peter’s College Negombo, St. Sebastian’s College Katuneriya, Siri Piyarathana MV Padukka, Rahula College Matara, Sri Devananda College Ambalangoda, Kalutara Vidyalaya, St. John’s College Panadura and Holy Cross College Kalutara advanced to the quarterfinals of  the ‘Singer Trophy’ Under 19 Division Two inter-schools cricket (two-day) tournament which at the moment has been postponed due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

The quarterfinal lineup:

St. Peter’s College Negombo v St. Sebastian’s College Katuneriya, Siri Piyarathana MV Padukka v Rahula College Matara, Sri Devananda College Ambalangoda v Kalutara Vidyalaya and St. John’s College Panadura v Holy Cross College Kalutara.

In the season so far four players have passed the 1000-run milestone and three bowlers have captured 100 wickets or more.

Sandaruwan Chinthaka (Galahitiyawa Central College), Samith Isuru (Karandeniya Central College), Ashan Dilhara (St. John’s College Panadura) and Ayon Heshara (St. Sebastian’s College Katuneriya) are the batsmen who have topped the 1000-run mark for the season.

Chinthaka (Galahitiyawa Central College) is the leading run scorer with 1248 runs in  13 matches (avg. 52.00) with  4 centuries and 5 half centuries. He made twin tons against Christ King College Ja Ela.

Samith Isuru (Karandeniya Central) is the only player to perform the double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets. He scored 1124 runs in 15 matches (avg. 45.33) and captured 122 wickets for 1601 runs. Last season (2018/19) he narrowly missed the double scoring 1000 runs but falling five wickets short of 100.Tharana de Silva (Sri Sumangala Panadura) was the highest scorer of the season with 252 against Revatha MMV Balapitiya.

Ashan Dilhara and Thuruwan Perera (both St. John’s Panadura) also made twin tons against Kegalu Vidyalaya. Dilhara has scored the most number of centuries – 5 for the season.

Sithuum Akilanka (St. Sebastian’s Katuneriya) and Manuja Dulneth (Rahula Matara) are the other bowlers to take 100 wickets for the season.

Dulneth also returned the best bowling in an innings with 8 wickets for 9 runs against Sri Jayawardhanapura MV Kotte and the best match figures of 14 wickets for 86 runs against Henegama MMV. – (YK)
