Three die, eight injured in Maligawatte stampede

Three women died and eight others were injured yesterday afternoon in a stampede at Jumma Masjid road in Maligawatte area during a private financial aid donation event.

The stampede had occurred at a residence in Jumma Masjid Street where over 500 people had gathered to receive money donated by a group of individuals.

Both the group and the organizers of the event had acted in violation of the curfew and quarantine laws currently in force, Police sources said. The police said eight more persons have been taken to the National Hospital and they are presently being treated at the accident ward.

Police spokesperson SP Jaliya Senaratne told media that six persons have been arrested in connection with the incident. According to sources the said financial distribution has been annually done by a businessman in the area to mark the end of Ramadan.

A magisterial inquiry too was conducted yesterday afternoon.
