Former Speaker denies media allegations

Former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday denied all allegations levelled against him in relation to the Constitutional Council, Police Commission and other independent commissions in recent media reports.

Jayasuriya observed that the reports are fake and fabricated stories that were circulated to affect the confidence of the public towards all independent commissions in the country.

Jayasuriya issuing a statement to the media said that he will take legal action against these misleading reports. He was referring to several media reports that he was attempting to influence the Police Commission on its duties.

“However, the Police Commission in an official letter has very clearly refuted such influences.

"The Commission has observed that the reports are completely fabricated. It has said that such media reports were carried out without verifying from the Commission. I do not take these false news as an attack against me, but as an attack against democracy.” Jayasuriya said.

The former Speaker said that he believes such media reports are a result of a political agenda. “The attempt is a campaign trying to influence the good faith of the public in the Constitutional Council and independent commissions,” he said.
