Navy ship dispatched to assist fishing boats in distress

The Navy has dispatched a naval vessel to assist fishing vessels that were in distress due to the effects of Cyclone Amphan.

Sri Lankan trawlers were stranded in the deep sea area close to Indonesia on account of the stormy weather associated with the cyclone.

The Navy dispatched a high-tech deep sea naval vessel yesterday (21) to assist the vessels in distress with fuel and supplies.

Around 30 Sri Lankan fishing trawlers had drifted towards Indonesian waters due to the effects of the storm.

However, with the storm weakening and moving away from the Bay of Bengal, the fishing vessels are making their way back home.

The Navy dispatched the deep sea vessel SLNS Samudura with fuel and supplies for these fishing vessels to enable them to return safely.
