Over 90% went in search of liquor, cigarettes

Over 60,500 curfew violators in two months

Over 60,500 curfew violators have been nabbed by police in two months of curfew imposed on March 20, 2020, Police spokesman SP Jaliya Senaratne told the Daily News.

It was also tragic that over 90% of this number were offenders who were found violating the curfew were those who went in search of cigarettes and alcohol, he said.

He said that there were 16,988 vehicles comprising buses, lorries, cars, trishaws and vans which were also in Police custody and associated with curfew violators.

There were also 17,193 cases also filed and punishments have been levied against 6,480 offenders which includes simple fines, jail sentences and even remand sentences, he said.

Among the detainees are offenders who have been associated with transporting drugs and narcotics.

He said that the law specified that prison sentences could go up to two years in jail.
