Nearly 5 million global cases

There are 4.8 million confirmed Covid-19 cases reported worldwide by yesterday by the World Health Organization (WHO), with 317,529 deaths and 106,662 new cases.

Since the virus’s origin last year, the numbers have closely escalated to almost five million confirmed cases. The WHO has compiled statistics for various regions, and the South America region has 2,105,670 confirmed cases, Europe 1,909,592 cases, Eastern Mediterranean 359,084, Western Pacific 169,955, South-East Asia 150,590 and Africa 65,956.

The USA has the highest deaths, with almost 100, 000 and the United Kingdom with 35,341 and Italy 32,169.

The Covid-19 virus originated in Wuhan, China last year, and soon it spread to many parts of the world. The Coronavirus soon caused a global lockdown. Curfew was imposed in many countries with several industries having to halt production, and many frontline workers risking their lives to carry out health and other essential services to the public. Sri Lanka was applauded by the World Health Organization for its tireless efforts in combating the Covid-19 virus. Sri Lanka has recorded nine deaths and only recently surpassed 1000 cases, with 584 recovered cases
