Kandy sportsman Neil Ubeyasiri dies at 71

Former Kandy sportsman Neil Ubeyasiri passed away at the age of 71 years last Saturday and was cremated the next day at Kadawatha. 

Neil was a product of St. Paul’s College Kandy, now known as Wariyapola Sri Sumangala College and was a resident at Peradeniya Road Katukelle. 

At school he was a top sportsman where he excelled in Football, Hockey and Athletics. He began his football club career with Young Wander S.C Kandy, before going onto play for Army. Some of his team mates at Young Wanders SC were Mahinda Aluwihare, Tuany Amidon, Ratnapala Aluwihare, Tom Ossen, M. Nilaf, Jayantha Kumara, H. Ariyaratne and David Perera.

In 1970 he joined the Army and served in the Engineering section and excelled in Football, Athletics, and Hockey. His pet sport was football and he played for Army Bullets and won colours on four occasions. He also played for the Defence Services and Sri Lanka teams in the mid 1970’s. 

In 1980 he resigned from the Army and joined the Airport Aviation Service and retired as a Deputy Security Marshal in 2005. For the Aviation Service he played Football, Hockey, Badminton, and Athletics and made several tours. He was also in the Veterans team and once one a Bronze medal in the 100 meters.

In 2005 he joined the Sri Lanka Football Federation and worked till 2018 ending up as Director of Logistics.  He leaves behind his wife Kanthi, two daughters Ushani and Nayomi and son Nilina.
