Kalutara floods claim 2 lives, displace 311

Two have died, while 311 others have been displaced by the recent floods in the Kalutara District. The latter are from 85 families in 46 Grama Niladhari divisions, Kalutara District Secretariat sources said.

The two deceased had been on a fishing trip when their boat had capsized. They have been identified as Anton Bastien Fernando, aged 53, and Niroshan Jayasuriya, aged 43. They were residents of Maggona.

The highest number of property damage cases in the district have been reported from the Millaniya area, with 22 destroyed houses. Meanwhile, 13 cases of property damage have been reported from Madurawala, 11 from Mathugama, 10 from Bulathsinhala, 6 from Horana, 5 from Agalawatta, 4 from Ingiriya, 3 from Dodangoda, and 2 each from Bandaragama and Beruwala. Steps have been taken to provide relief to flood victims, and the damaged houses and other properties are to be renovated. People living in low-lying areas near the Kalu and Kukule rivers, as well as other water bodies, have been given flood warnings. Lifeguards have been deployed to those areas as well, sources said.
