Maha Sangha, Pillar of Strength for War Heroes

We turn to Maha Sangha for mental solace, for strength, for protection from evil elements, almost for everything. The Maha Sangha is a giant fence which protects the Armed Forces and the political leadership of the country. Nothing or no one was able to pass this giant iron fence and reach them. Since the time of Arahath Anubudu Maha Mahinda Thera, our Bhikkus protected Sri Lanka, Sri Lankans, Sri Lankan patriotic political leadership and the heroic Armed Forces.

What is the first thing we do if we are all alone and feel scared? If you are a Buddhist you will think about ‘Budu Guna’ (Ithipiso Bhagawa Arahan....) and worship. If you belong to any other religion, you will pray for solace from your respective religious leaders or icons. What matters here is the power of religion which makes you physiologically strong. One can call it positive thinking. But the power is there. We all feel it. If you want to destroy something or someone you have to attack the physiological strength of that person. This is the logic behind the pattern of attacking Maha Sangha in Sri Lanka.

The main strength behind the war victory achieved by our heroic armed forces led by then President and current Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and then Defence Secretary and the current President Gotabaya Rajapaksa is the blessing of the Maha Sangha. There was nothing more powerful than the protection given to our brave soldiers and political leaders through those blessings conveyed through ‘Pirith Nool’, ‘Pirith Pen’, ‘Bodhi Pooja’, ‘Pirith chanting’ etc. All the other religions too gave strength to them.

Nothing and no one can defeat a physiologically strong person. He or she will definitely achieve the target given. Sacrificing the precious life is nothing if a person is physiologically strong. That is how ‘Hasalaka Weeraya’, Corporal Gamini Kularatne PWV, SLSR (S/34553) sacrificed his precious life for Mother Lanka on July 14, 1991. Therefore it is obvious if anyone wants to destroy a country, culture or simply a person, he/she attacks the point where physiological strength comes from. Here in Sri Lanka it is the Maha Sangha.

We turn to the Maha Sangha for mental solace, for strength, for protection from evil elements, almost for everything.

We witnessed many attacks on the Maha Sangha during the past years. We witnessed what they used to attack them. They deployed almost all their resources to find out something to attack and imprison members of the Maha Sangha in the past five years. Without being able to see the power of religions, the power of Mother Nature and the power of truth, they continue to attack other religious leaders as well. Everything possible was done by those traitors of mother Lanka to destroy the main physiological strength behind the country and the people no matter what religion or ethnicity they belong to.

But Maha Sangha and other religious leaders did not attack the attackers back. They kindly treated with compassion. But the justice done by religions themselves, by Mother Nature and by the invisible power all the people believe irrespective of their religions.

Nothing or no one who tries to destroy this giant power, Bhikkus and other religious leaders protecting the country and the people will survive to continue their evil acts. Mother Nature has a limit for everything. In one way, the entire world is experiencing it through COVID-19 at the moment.

Watching the Maha Sangha protecting Sri Lanka is not something new to Sri Lankans. It has happened for more than 2,300 years. The generations of Maha Sangha continued to do so and the process will continue forever. It is illuminating to see how the Maha Sangha protected the country and the people during the LTTE terror period which lasted for 30 long years.

One of the main tasks done by Maha Sangha during the LTTE terror period was protecting villages that bordered areas dominated by the Tigers. The Maha Sangha did not vacate their Buddhist temples and run away in fear of the LTTE barbaric terrorists. They stayed in temples in the middle of death threats protecting the people who lived in those villages. They did not sleep or have ‘Dana’. They did not have any other comfort. But they did not give up. They gave the strength to the people and the Armed Forces to fight against the barbaric terrorists who killed infants, pregnant mothers, elderly, sick and disabled, hacking them to death using all types of weapons.

What was protected by Buddhist monks was not limited to human lives and the land. They protected priceless historical archaeological sites. Protecting crucial archaeological sites was very important because the LTTE was trying their best to tell the world that they are the original ‘owners’ of Sri Lanka and they were the original citizens of the country. They fabricated many theories to prove this new concept but the only obstacle against achieving their target was the large number of archaeological sites which proved to the world the real Sri Lankan history. Nothing or no one could disprove the evidence from archaeological sites.

The LTTE badly wanted to capture the areas with crucial archaeological evidence because then they could destroy the evidence contradicting their new theories. It was our Maha Sangha who sacrificed their precious lives to protect Sri Lanka’s real history and the living evidence for the country’s ancient historical record.

Matara Kithalagama Sri Seelalankara Thera (also known as Dimbulagala Hamuduruwo) was the pioneer in restoring the ancient Buddhist monastery Dimbulagala Raja Maha Viharaya in the 1950s and was the chief incumbent of the monastery for around four decades.

He lived a modest life and spent his life for the development of the ancient monastery and for the uplift of the poor peasants who lived in the surrounding areas of the Polonnaruwa District in the North Central Province.

On May 26, 1995 Kithalagama Sri Seelalankara Nayaka Thera, popularly known as Dimbulagala Hamuduruwo was killed by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) when he was on his way to visit a farm belonging to the temple.

He provided moral support to the poor people living in villages to fight LTTE intrusions into their villages.

He was the chief Sanghanayaka of the Northern and Eastern Provinces and Tamankaduva area at the time of his death. Sri Lanka Post issued a postage stamp on July 21, 2005, to commemorate his valuable service to the nation.

Bhikkus are the tower of strength behind our Armed Forces, our patriotic political leaders, our citizens and even lifeless resources of this priceless land. We have to protect our Armed Forces, our patriotic political leaders and the Nation’s protective shield that is the Maha Sangha.
