‘New electric fence for A’pura, lime plants for Wilpattu’

With respect to the growing human-elephant conflict in Anuradhapura, Kurunegala and Polonnaruwa districts, Environment and Wildlife Resources and Lands and Land Development Minister S.M. Chandrasena told the Daily News that in addition to the existing 4,500km-long electric fence, a 1,000km-long new fence, of which 650km is over, is being constructed in the Anuradhapura District.

He said a properly-designed and planned electric fence and a live fence parallel to it could minimize the human-elephant conflict.

“Under a pilot project, 300,000 lime plants are being planted parallel to the 145km-long electric fence along Wilpattuwa,” Minister Chandrasena said.
