Flood warnings issued for upcountry

The Ihala Kotmale, Laxapana and Wimalasurendra reservoirs reached spill level due to the heavy rains in the catchment areas in the western slope of the Central hills.

Engineers in charge of the reservoirs said water level of the reservoirs had risen and two spill gates of Laxapana reservoir and three spill gates of the Ihala Kotmale reservoir have already been opened.

The public should be vigilant as water level of the Kelani River will increase with overflowing of the Laxapana and Wimalasurendra reservoirs.

Many roads in the Nawalapitiya town were inundated yesterday hampering the traffic flow. The people in Nawalapitiya said that since drainage systems could not cope with the rate of falling rain, the entire town submerged.

Meanwhile, 14 houses of estate workers in Bogawanthalawa had inundated in overflowing of the Keselgamu Oya carrying water from the Mahaeliya conservation to the Castlereagh reservoir. The displaced were directed to the safe locations by the Estate authorities.

Around 80 families in the Ginigathhena Divisional Secretariat have been displaced due to heavy rains.

The flow of traffic on the Hatton - Colombo main road, roads in Watawala and Diyagala have been blocked with landslides, rock and earth mounds and soil erosions. RDA officials, security forces with the support of residents have removed the earth mounds from the Colombo - Hatton main road.

Meanwhile, around 25 houses in the Watawala area have been submerged due to overflowing of Hatton Oya.
