Heavy rains, wind batter Galle

Torrential rains and strong wind that lashed Galle over past several days affected 494 people of 146 families, the Galle District Disaster Management Centre states.

The highest number of affected families has been reported from the Elpitiya Divisional Secretariat area (162) along with 48 damaged houses. 

Lightning injured two persons of Imaduwa in Ahangama and they have been hospitalised.  Two houses in Niyagama and Hikkaduwa have been completely destroyed in heavy rains and wind.

An official of the Relief Services Centre said that the Neluwa and Thawalama Divisional Secretariat areas received heavy rains till yesterday evening.

Galle District Secretary Somaratna Vidanapatirana said relief was provided to the affected and the damaged properties will be compensated.

The 19 Divisional Secretariats of the district have been affected by the torrential rains and heavy storms.

The people of low lying areas of Ginganga have been warned of potential floods and life-saving teams have been deployed in vulnerable areas along with boats and canoes, the official said.
