Number of passenger flights, air services to be increased

Operation of passenger flights and air services at the Mattala, Batticaloa, Ratmalana and Jaffna International Airports along with that of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) will be increased while providing adequate precautionary measures to prevent COVID 19 from entering the country.

The Airport  and  Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Limited has submitted a number of proposals in this regard, Industrial Export, Investment Promotion, Tourism and Civil Aviation Minister Prasanna Ranatunga  yesterday said.

The BIA can accommodate six million passengers annually. But it now handles nearly 10 million passengers.

However, a mechanism will be introduced to minimise the arrivals at the BIA facilitating the passengers to reach the nearest airports close to their destinations, to evade congestion at the BIA.

The proposals in this regard include obtaining a name list of air passengers from the respective airlines before their passengers arrive in Sri  Lanka, directing passengers through disinfection chambers on arrival, making it is compulsory for all air passengers to submit PCR test reports, conducting PCR tests, directing passengers to quarantine centers and sanitizing airport and aircraft inside.
