Islamic scholar Dr. Shukri passes away

Director of Jamiah Naleemiyah and well-known Islamic scholar Dr. M.A.M. Shukri passed away on Tuesday while receiving treatment in.

His Janaza prayers were conducted at the Dehiwela Jumma Mosque with a restricted crowd under present quarantine regulations. Subsequently, the remains were taken for burial at the Sheikh Madar Burial Grounds at Rahula Road, Matara, his hometown.

He was appointed Director of Jamiah Naleemiah by Marhoom Al-Haj M.I.M. Naleem in 1982. Since then he dedicated his life to the Jamiah Naleemiah and its development. Naleemiah was fortunate to have him as its director for more than 40 years.

One of Dr. Shukri’s greatest contributions to the Muslim community is the compilation of the history of Sri Lankan Muslims. He edited a historical compendium on the Sri Lankan Muslim community titled Muslims of Sri Lanka: Avenues to antiquity.

Acting President of the All-Ceylon YMMA Conference Shaheed M. Rismy said the demise of Dr. Shukri is an irreparable loss to the community.

Dr. Shukri was an old boy of Zahira College, Colombo.
