Court rejects bail for jailed STC chairman

The Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar yesterday refused to grant bail on former State Timber Corporation (STC) Chairman Piyadasa Dissanayaka.

Former State Timber Corporation (STC) Chairman Piyadasa Dissanayaka, who found guilty for soliciting a bribe from an Indian investor who wished to acquire a section of the Kantale sugar factory, was sentenced to 12 year rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs. 55,000 by the Permanent High Court Trial-at-Bar on December 19, 2019.

The Trial-at-Bar bench comprising High Court Judges Sampath Abeykoon (President), Sampath Wijeratne and Champa Janaki Rajaratne rejected the bail application citing that there is no special circumstance to release the accused on bail.

The order regarding the bail application on behalf former President Maithripala Sirisena's former Chief of Staff Kusumdasa Mahanama to be announced on June 2.
