Flood warnings for upcountry

The Ihala Kotmale, Laxapana and Wimalasurendra reservoirs reached spill level due to the heavy rains in the catchment areas in the western slope of the Central hills.

Engineers in charge of the reservoirs said the water level of the reservoirs hadrisen and two spill gates of Laxapana reservoir and three spill gates of the Ihala Kotmale reservoir have already been opened.

The public should be vigilant as water level of Kelani river will increase due to overflowing of the Laxapana and Wimalasurendra reservoir.Many roads in Nawalapitiya town were inundated yesterday resulting in the hamperof flow of traffic due to heavy rains.

People in Nawalapitiya town said since drainage systems could not cope with the rate of falling rain, the entire Nawalapitiya town subnmerged by the rainwater.

Meanwhile, 14 houses of estate workers in Bogawanthalawa had inundated as result of the overflowing of Keselgamu Oya carrying water from Mahaeliya conservation to the Castlereagh reservoir. The displaced were directed to the safe locations by the Estate authorities.

Around 80 families in the Ginigathhena Divisional Secretariat have been displaced due to heavy rains. The flow of traffic on the Hatton - Colombo main road, roads in Watawala and Diyagala has been blocked due to landslides, rock and earth mounds and soil erosions. RDA officials , security forces with the support of residents have removed the earth mounds from the Colombo - Hatton main road.Meanwhile, around 25 houses in the Watawala area have been submerged due to overflowing of Hatton Oya.
