Making 11th anniversary of civil war victory:

Army Commander commends Forces’ efforts to curb COVID-19

Army Commander Lt. Gen. Shavendra Silva, issuing a statement on the 11th anniversary of the victory in the 30-year war, paid tribute to the war heroes who sacrificed their lives, as well as those who are currently battling the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Today as we celebrate the 11th Anniversary of the ending of the Vanni Humanitarian Mission, we pay tribute to all the tri-forces personnel who laid down their lives in achieving this victory; and to all the civilians who lost their lives, and to all the Sri Lankans who supported and contributed towards achieving this victory, I pay my respects.”

He called on all Sri Lankans to unite under one flag as citizens of this country and make use of this victory. “Currently, the Sri Lanka Army has gone beyond its duties of ensuring national security and has undertaken the task of nation-building, humanitarian projects; and working towards economic, social, and cultural projects. I believe that the Army is rendering a huge service in all these areas, which should be commended,” he added.

The Commander also commended the contribution rendered to the health services by the Sri Lanka Army, together with the other forces and the police, adding that the country has now reached a decisive point in combatting the spread of the coronavirus in the country. “Just as we acted to end the war, we are still committed to serving the motherland in this time of need. We have repeatedly proven that nothing is impossible. Hence, we must salute all those who are committed to serving the country at this time of need to defeat COVID-19. I pray that the day Sri Lanka becomes free of the coronavirus is not so far away,” he said.
