Remembering sporting personality Daya Jayasundara

Kandy’s Daya Jayasundara who was a student of Dharmaraja College, Kandy SC, Police and Sri Lanka sportsman who died in 2012 was remembered by his rugby friends in Kandy when a religious ceremony was held in his memory. Daya was 68 years at the time of his death.

Daya played cricket, football, hockey and was also a fine athlete and a top class boxer. After leaving school in mid 1960s, he joined Kandy Sports Club, during the time of Maurice Perera’s coaching and played under Y.C. Chang in 1968. It was at Kandy Sports Club that he first played rugger as, during his school days there was no rugger at Dharmaraja College.

In the Kandy SC-Police game at Nittawella, Daya gave a good display and the Police rugby chairman of that time Rudra Rajasinghe spotted his talent and invited him to join the Police.

Daya joined the Police force as a Sub Inspector and rose to be a DIG. He played for Police as a flanker and led them in 1974. He later managed and coached teams and was also a top class rugby referee. His death was an irreparable loss to rugby.
