6,000 PCR tests per day soon - MRI Director

A total of 44,391 PCR tests have been done so far by May 17 and steps will be taken to increase the daily number of PCR tests up to 6,000 soon. The Medical Research Institute (MRI) does over 1500 PCR Tests daily but this is not the maximum capacity of the MRI, MRI Director Dr. Jayaruwan Bandara said.

According to Dr. Bandara, the total number of PCR tests done in the MRI will be increased up to 3000 soon and at the moment the full capacity of the MRI is not being used. It is planned to increase the total daily PCR Tests performed in Sri Lanka through all institutions to 6000 by health authorities.

"It was the MRI which produced a Rs.25 million worth solution from last February which was used to transport COVID-19 virus to laboratories. The MRI was produced with the assistance of another institution, SLINTEC. It is advisable to follow simple things in order to prevent the COVID-19 infection. One of them is by not using air conditioning as much as possible. When traveling by a vehicle, we can simply switch off the A/C and open the windows," he said.

The MRI was able to easily face the COVID-19 testing process because the MRI was prepared to face the possibility of any unexpected viral outbreak, he added. In addition to the PCR machines at State hospitals, several machines are available at State Universities and private hospitals.
