No room for LTTE commemoration

A senior military official in Mullaithivu said those who plan to commemorate the LTTE in the guise of remembering civilians who died in the war will be arrested.

He said security has been tightened in the Wellamullivaikkal and other areas where such commemorations are suspected to take place.

“No one will be permitted to use photographs of LTTE members, display their flags or uniforms. However, there is no hindrance to anyone who wants to commemorate civilians who died in the war, but added that all these commemorations should be done in accordance with Covid-19 health guidelines.

The military official said as it is against the law to congregate in large numbers, in the event anyone organises such large scale events where crowds gather they would be arrested. In all commemoration ceremonies, those participating should all wear face masks and maintain social distancing and refrain from sharing food or drinks.

He added that the police and STF has been deployed to take action against anyone who violates these health guidelines and even the PHI members are monitoring these areas to ensure that all health guidelines are maintained during such commemoration events.
