Fertilizer shortage to be resolved

Co-cabinet Spokesman Plantation Industries and Export Agriculture Minister Dr. Ramesh Pathirana said the fertilizer shortage prevailing in certain parts of the country would be resolved in the next few days.

Addressing the weekly Cabinet media briefing held yesterday at the Government Information Department Dr Pathirana said the unexpected demand for fertilizer has  resulted in the existing shortage and the Government has already taken measures to import sufficient stocks of  fertilizer.

"As a result of Covid-19 outbreak, currently there is a huge demand for agriculture not only in Sri Lanka but also in many other countries in the world. As a result of this the demand for fertilizer in this Yala season has also increased three times than was estimated by the Agriculture Ministry." said the Minister.

The transport of fertilizer was also delayed due to the prevailing situation of the country. The Agriculture Ministry in collaboration with the National Fertilizer Secretariat has now implemented a special mechanism to transport fertilizer to the provinces.
