Construction value addition reaches Rs 174 bn

The Department of Census and Statistics released the survey of Construction Industries 2017/18 being the 19th iteration of the report. The total estimated Value Added by all types of construction activities in Sri Lanka was Rs. 174 billion.

The number of people engaged in the sector stood at 95,854. The wage bill of the sector stood at Rs 21 billion. There were 2,673 establishments in the sector completing contracts value at Rs 898 billion. The Value Addition by the sector was Rs 174 billion, with intermediate consumption at Rs 177 billion, and Value of Work Done at Rs 310 billion.

The largest sub-sector in construction was the construction of roads and railways accounting for 41.38 percent of total work completed.

The construction of buildings was the second-largest sub-sector accounting for 33.77 percent of work. The construction of Utility projects was third largest with 18.62 percent of work. Raw materials consumed by the sector totaled Rs 105 billion. Iron and Steel accounted for Rs 15.5 billion and Cement accounted for Rs 11.5 billion. 53 percent of organizations in the sector employed less than 10 people and 84 percent of organizations in the sector are sole proprietorships.
