Spanning two centuries or Siyawas Dekak Sirasa was one of my Mother’s books out of twenty-three books she published in addition to the thousands of articles she published in English & Sinhala newspapers. I am sure many readers could remember her for the weekly Column MUSINGS in the Sunday Observer and I am still astonished as to how she did all this with the limited time and resources she had considering that she was a government servant who worked all around the country. This particular book a semi-autobiography of her was launched in 2012. Even though I was a participant in that event and bought a copy duly signed by her that day, it was only in April 2020 COVID-19 holidays after two years into her demise I had the rare honour of reading this masterpiece. I was shocked at her meticulous writing skills in Sinhala and was glued to the book until the end, a feat I cannot remember until the early ’80s of my favourite author James Hadley Chase. Her knowledge of history coupled to her life story was an absolute thriller and made me wonder how much I have missed. I am also saddened that I have not congratulated enough on her success in journalism. Amma, I want to say that you are a brilliant writer and we miss your talents so much!

I could also recall a tribute on the demise of my mother written by now reputed journalist Aditha Dissanayake aptly titled “We are made of you” which depicts how much she has been adored by many aspiring journalists.

She taught us how to live without burdening others and how hard work & commitment brings glory in the relevant fields. Amma, you will always remain a Hero in our minds and an unsung hero to many others!
