Minister seeks probe on assault on CEB meter reader

Passenger Transport Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera yesterday strongly condemned the assault on an electricity bill meter reader by a homeowner in a Pelmadulla calming that the electricity bill is too high.

Minister Amaraweera instructed the Ministry Secretary to make a written request to the IGP to commence an impartial investigation on this assault and take stern action against the culprit. The Minster said that assaulting a public officer during duty hours would provide a bad example to the society if no action is taken against the culprits. It is the responsibility of the Government to protect the public servants involved in the field duties as well as office duties," he added.

The Minister further said that meter reader has done his official duty and the Power and Energy Ministry has introduced many alternative measures to clarify electricity bills if there are any corrections or mistakes. “Assaulting a public servant visiting homes to fulfill their duties cannot be accepted," the Minister added.
