52,000 arrested for curfew violations

The Police have arrested 52,126 individuals so far on charges of violating the curfew imposed during the measures taken to prevent the spread of Covid-19, Police Media Spokesman SP Jaliya Senaratne said.

Addressing a media briefing at the Police Headquarters, he said that the Police had submitted information to courts pertaining to 9,783 of them. According to the Police Spokesman, so far charges have been filed against 5,212 persons for violating curfew laws.

Meanwhile, a total of 13,594 vehicles have been taken into police custody over curfew violations, the Police Spokesman said.

He said 10,366 of those vehicles have so far been returned to the owners of the vehicles pending legal action.

SP Senaratne noted that  the curfew imposed by the police had been challenged at two courts and that the verdict given by the Gampaha Magistrate’s Court had endorsed the measures taken by the police to impose a curfew as being completely legal and the arrests made under the curfew laws were also legal.
